HEALTH CLUSTER CO LEAD (Expiration 14/11/2019)

The overall purpose of the health cluster is to Provide health leadership in emergency and crisis preparedness, response and recovery; Prevent and reduce emergency-related morbidity and mortality; Ensure evidence-based actions, gap filling and sound coordination; and Enhance accountability, predictability and effectiveness of humanitarian health actions.

The Health Cluster Co lead /-Coordinator will contribute for the fulfillment of the Health Cluster’s purposes, which are to provide substantial assistance in the implementation of inclusive, field-level humanitarian coordination mechanisms, including liaison with relevant UN operational agencies, NGOs, and local authorities.  

The cluster approach has been introduced as a part of “humanitarian reform” aimed at improving the effectiveness of humanitarian response by ensuring greater predictability and accountability, while at the same time strengthening partnerships between NGOs, international organizations, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and UN agencies.  The other, complementary elements of the reform are: strengthening the humanitarian coordinator (HC) system; and improving humanitarian financing. The aim of a country-level Health Cluster is to ensure a more coherent and effective humanitarian response by all international, national and local actors operating in the health sector in areas affected by crisis.  

In order to be successful you will bring/have:

  • Degree in medicine and /or Public Health.
  • Health professional with extensive experiences of humanitarian response and coordination mechanism for 5-6 years, of which at least 3 in managing and coordinating health programme in chronic, acute and sudden-onset emergencies.
  • Prior experience on coordination, representation, negotiation,
  • Experience of preparing successful funding proposals for donors,
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to write clear and well-argued assessment and project reports and a high level of written and spoken English
  • Politically and culturally sensitive with qualities of patience, tact and diplomacy
  • The capacity and willingness to be flexible and accommodating in difficult and sometimes insecure working circumstances.
  • Commitment to the aims and principles of humanitarian coordination.
  • Language skills in Arabic  
  • Familiar with the Sudan health system and context, as well as working and living experiences in Sudan

Contract duration: 12 months
