Africa Re announces a vacancy for the position of Life Medical Manager in the Department of Central Operations and Special Risk in the Head Office in Lagos, Nigeria.

A. RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate shall act as a technical professional in reviewing applications for individual life and health insurance and evaluating, classifying and rating each risk in order to determine acceptability, coverage and pricing.

B. DUTIES/JOB DETAILS

The main duties of the Life Medical Manager shall comprise, amongst others, the following:

  • Act as medical consultant for underwriting and claim cases for all the regional offices;
  • Interpret medical information and make recommendations for underwriting and claims;
  • Review and make recommendations for  critical illness and disability claims;
  • Regularly review medical underwriting requirements provided in life treaties for each region;
  • Liaise with medical examiners and medical attendants to ensure that relevant medical tests are conducted;
  • Provide medical training for life underwriters;
  • Provide expert advice on medical requirements and documentation to the insurer;
  • Conduct evidence-based reviews on medical topics to support product development, product pricing and underwriting technics;
  • Constantly review Africa Re’s medical underwriting manual based on developments in medical science;
  • Review and maintain medical underwriting software;
  • Carry out research on medical conditions common among life insurance applicants and the rating methods to apply;
  • Keep the insurer abreast of major medical advances, including those in genetic science;
  • Work with actuaries in pricing for unfamiliar territories advising main causes of death, disability and critical illnesses;
  • Set underwriting grids for different products;
  • Conduct and/or participate in the Corporation’s training sessions and seminars on medical underwriting and claims administration for clients.

 

C. MAIN COMPETENCIES REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION

  • Have very strong and proven managerial skills/experience;
  • In-depth knowledge of health insurance laws and regulations;
  • Understanding of medical coding;
  • Sound insurance and reinsurance technical knowledge;
  • Very good reporting skills;
  • Good supervisory skills;
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills;
  • Ability to quickly build good and sustainable relationship with stakeholders;
  • Work experience in an insurance/reinsurance company;
  • Ability to work under pressure;
  • Excellent skills in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), Adobe and Graphics.

 

D. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

 

  • First University Medical degree plus Masters in relevant field plus 5 years post qualification relevant qualitative work experience

Or

  • First University Medical Degree plus full professional qualification plus 5 years post qualification relevant qualitative work experience

Or

  • First University Medical Degree plus 9 years post qualification relevant qualitative work experience
  • 4-5 Years of experience in a similar role in the insurance and/or reinsurance industry will be an added advantage.

E. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR CANDIDATES FOR THIS POSITION:

Applicants must also be:

  • Fluent in English; a working knowledge of French will be an added advantage;
  • Nationals of member states of Africa Re;
  • Less than 45 years old.

F. SALARY AND BENEFITS

The successful candidate shall have the following benefits:

  • Competitive Basic Salary on the Corporation’s Grade Level PS 2;
  • Variable pay (Annual Performance Bonus);
  • Joint contribution to the Provident Fund (7% of the basic salary paid by staff and 14% by the employer);
  • Education subsidy for each child up to 26 years (maximum 4 children);
  • Medical cover for staff and family;
  • Housing allowance;
  • Exemption from taxes and duties (diplomatic status of an international civil servant);
  • Home leave to country of origin every two years paid by the employer;
