1) Business Results:

  • To ensure that BAT becomes the partner of choice for governments and takes a leading role as appropriate within the industry as well as amongst key allies on tobacco control issues including excise, illicit trade, harm reduction and FTAs as appropriate
  • To contribute to the achievement of business objectives by ensuring regulatory impact mitigation on a cross functional basis and identifying opportunities for competitive advantage in the development of the regulatory environment
  • To contribute to sustainability of the business by shaping the business environment through the drive of planning and execution of campaigns designed to deliver the preferred regulatory future as defined through the strategy & budget cycle
  • To design, implement and manage effective global corporate reputation management strategies and initiatives which support LEX’s strategic imperative to help British American Tobacco ‘be known as a responsible company in an industry seen as controversial’
  • Monitor and interpret the legislative environment in which the business operates to ensure the business understands and meets its legal obligations as laid out in statutes and regulations, in addition to various compliance procedures required
  • Contribute to the development and execution of the functional strategy.
  • Take responsibility for the management of any litigation instituted by or against the business and ensure cost effective management.
  • Provide proactive legal commercial support to the business through internal legal resources and as appropriate through specialist external legal support.
  • Facilitate and manage trade mark registrations and renewals and trade mark related activities affecting any of the brands

2) People Results:


  • Constantly identify and maintain high quality political and public affairs consultants as required
  • Represent the company on regulatory issues, ensuring and coordinating the involvement of expertise from other functions as necessary.
  • Support, implement and achieve the strategic plans and objectives of the Legal Function in line with the business strategy
  • Powerful and effective communication to the business on the relevance and strategic business importance of the area of responsibility of this role.
  • Identify new initiatives and proposals in line with the business strategy and values to ensure legal operates at the heart of the business and as effective risk managers and business partners.
  • To drive and manage the continuous development of BAT’s regulatory engagement with a view to promoting tobacco regulation which balances the interests of consumers with the interests of society.
  • Efficiently manage budget to achieve assigned targets within the financial agreed scope.
  • Provide the necessary support to achieve a sensible excise regime that balances government and Company expectations
  • Participate and contribute to cross functional projects and initiatives in the business involving Supply Chain, IT, HR, Marketing and security to assess, monitor and anticipate potential threats to minimize legal risks and ensure achievement of the business objectives.
  • Ensure an improved control environment in Legal in line with the business strategy
  • Acting as a key liaison point or spokesperson for the company with relevant stakeholders and engaging in an interactive dialogue with relevant stakeholders (including top decision makers in governments, regulators, NGOs, pressure groups, Industry colleagues on industry affairs, so as to create positive relationships built on mutual benefit and trust.
  • Identify and take steps in conjunction with management to minimize commercial risk.

Main Requirements:


  • At least 12 years of experience in a substantial LEX role in multinational commercial/FMCG organization with a proven track record
  • Deep understanding of the tobacco industry and its political, social and economic environment
  • Active interest in business, tobacco and tobacco control issues, aptitude for absorbing information and intuitive application to the debate.
  • Appreciation/understanding of political affairs – e.g. policy making processes and campaigning
  • Cultural awareness and appreciation of the local business and regulatory environment
  • Ability to apply knowledge of tobacco control to the development of the business
  • Fluency in written and spoken English, French and Arabic and familiarity with legal documentation in the English, French and Arabic language
  • Influencing skills, Strategic Thinking and Rational Decision Making, leading & managing change demonstrated at Senior Management level.
  • Ability to take both a strategic and tactical view of the business.
  • Creativity – finding new angles to address regulatory challenges
  • Commitment and passion – attention to detail and a desire to succeed (potentially limited number of chances to get it right with regulators)
  • A sound commercial sense and practical approach;
  • Ability to work in a team at all levels of seniority within BAT and outside;
  • High level commercial and corporate experience with exposure to and experience of trademarks and litigation being advantageous;
  • Effective in coordinating matters and resources in‑house and in directing external advisers in complex transactions;
  • Ability to exercise judgement and assess risk in diverse markets;
